Semut api atau semut merah (Solenopsis) merupakan salah satu jenis semut dari ordo Hymenoptera. Panjang semut pekerjanya mencapai 3 mm dan panjang ratu semut mencapai 6 mm. Jenis semut ini berwarna coklat agak kemerahan.
Seperti kebanyakan jenis semut, semut api hidup dalam koloni yang terorganisir dengan baik. Mereka memiliki struktur sosial yang kompleks, terdiri dari ratu, pekerja, dan tentara. Masing-masing memiliki peran khusus dalam menjaga keberlanjutan koloni dan melibatkan kerjasama yang erat.
Serangga ini biasanya hidup berkoloni dengan jumlah koloni bisa mencapai hingga 100.000 ekor semut. Tiap koloni semut api dipimpin oleh ratu semut yang menghasilkan telur antara 150-200 telur setiap hari. Semut api membuat gundukan tanah yang tingginya dapat mencapai hingga 2 kaki. Gundukan tinggi tersebut biasanya dibuat di tempat yang terbuka dan terkena sinar matahari.
Semut merah memiliki kemampuan beradaptasi yang tinggi terhadap perubahan lingkungan. Mereka dapat hidup di berbagai habitat, mulai dari hutan hujan hingga daerah perkotaan. Kemampuan ini memungkinkan mereka untuk tetap bertahan di berbagai kondisi dan menjaga keberlanjutan koloni.
Semut api mampu menyengat binatang dan juga manusia. Jika merasa terganggu atau terancam, semut merah akan menyerang (menggigit) dan kemudian menyuntikkan racun kepada musuhnya. Racun tersebut menyebabkan kita merasa terbakar karena api.
